Being diagnosed with lymphedema can feel overwhelming. Many patients leave their first appointment with more questions than answers, unsure of what caused their swelling, how serious it is, or what comes next.

We explain the three essential questions every patient should ask their doctor after a lymphedema diagnosis. These questions help you understand your condition, avoid complications, and take control of your care early.

Watch: How RFH cares for lymphedema patients.

1. What caused my lymphedema?

Lymphedema develops when the lymphatic system is damaged or unable to properly drain fluid. Understanding why it happened is critical, because the cause often determines how it should be treated.

Common causes include:

  • Cancer treatments such as surgery or radiation
  • Lymph node removal or injury
  • Infection or trauma
  • Congenital or genetic lymphatic disorders

There are two primary types of lymphedema:

  • Primary lymphedema, which is rare and usually present from birth or develops later due to genetic abnormalities
  • Secondary lymphedema, which is more common and caused by damage to the lymphatic system from surgery, cancer treatment, infection, or injury

Knowing the root cause allows your care team to assess your risk of progression and tailor a treatment plan that fits your specific condition, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

2. What treatment options do I have?

Many patients are surprised to learn that lymphedema is manageable, even though it is a chronic condition. Early, consistent treatment can significantly reduce swelling, improve mobility, and prevent long-term complications.

Evidence-based lymphedema treatment may include:

  • Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)
  • Compression therapy (bandaging, garments, or advanced devices)
  • Therapeutic exercise
  • Skin care and infection prevention
  • Ongoing monitoring and follow-up

At Restore First Health, lymphedema care is delivered in the comfort of the patient’s home, removing common barriers like transportation, missed work, or limited access to specialists.

Our advanced lymphedema services include:

  • In-home evaluations by trained clinicians
  • Accurate limb measurements and staging
  • Personalized compression and therapy plans
  • Education on self-management and daily care
  • Telehealth follow-ups to track progress and adjust treatment

This coordinated, at-home model helps patients stay consistent with care, one of the most important factors in long-term outcomes.

3. What are the complications if I don’t manage it?

One of the most important, and often overlooked, questions is what happens if lymphedema is left untreated.

Without proper management, lymphedema can lead to:

  • Progressive swelling and fibrosis
  • Chronic pain and limited mobility
  • Recurrent skin infections such as cellulitis
  • Wound development and delayed healing
  • Increased risk of hospitalization
  • Permanent tissue changes that are harder to reverse

Lymphedema is a progressive medical condition. Early intervention and ongoing care can prevent complications and significantly improve quality of life.
